The history of San Jose, one place at a time

Among its recorded episodes are a wounded soldier's 1838 land grant, Rancho San Antonio de Padua, which once covered ground later known as Loyola, and a transit system that had to keep redoing its own fare estimates between 1948 and 1953.

On November 26, 1933, a lynch mob hanged two accused killers in St. James Park, an episode recorded in San Jose State University's Special Collections and Archives.

It was a Mexican land grant dating to 1839, given to Juan Prado Mesa, a soldier wounded in 1838 who died of his injuries in 1845. The 7,982-acre grant once covered ground that later became Loyola, California.

The name comes from a Jesuit college planned there in 1904, which was never built after the 1906 earthquake. Loyola is an unincorporated pocket of Santa Clara County between Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.

Between 1948 and 1953, San Jose commissioned at least four separate estimates, each titled some variant of 'estimate of results of operation under present and proposed fares,' to justify raising transit fares. T. A. Hopkins signed every one, first with William R. Peters and later with Timothy J. Canty.
