This is the first instance of cross-platform interchange in the Beijing Subway
A three-line transfer station under your feet moves a quarter million riders on its busiest day.

The short answer
Fengtai, Beijing, holds Songjiazhuang station, where lines 5, 10 and the Yizhuang line converge across ten platforms and seven tracks, the third triple-line interchange in the Beijing Subway. Its Spanish-solution platforms let riders cross directly between trains. Underneath lie Western Han tombs sealed since before AD 24, unearthed in 1974, and a Jin dynasty gate from Zhongdu, the twelfth-century capital.

Songjiazhuang became a rare three-line subway interchange
Before the trains, this ground held graves for over two thousand years. The Dabaotai Western Han Dynasty tombs were dug up in 1974, sealed since the Western Han dynasty, sometime between 206 BC and AD 24. That layer sat quiet under Fengtai long after the dynasty that built it was gone.
What sits above it now is built for speed, not rest. Songjiazhuang station carries Line 5, Line 10, and the Yizhuang Line, all meeting under this one patch of ground. Line 10's second phase opened on December 30, 2012. It turned Songjiazhuang into only the third station in the whole Beijing Subway where three lines cross. Before it, only Xizhimen and Dongzhimen managed that trick.
The engineers who built the Yizhuang Line platforms here tried something nobody in the system had done. They used what is called a Spanish solution. One line has two platforms, one for boarding and one for landing. They sit on either side of the same track. Riders getting off Line 5 could step straight across to a Yizhuang Line platform without climbing a single stair. Ten platforms and seven tracks came together in one hall, more platforms than any other station in the network.
The test came on May 5, 2013. Songjiazhuang handled 262,800 passengers that day, the heaviest crowd the station had carried. A hall engineered for a smooth, single step across a platform found itself absorbing a small city's worth of people in one afternoon.
This was the first cross-platform interchange in the history of the Beijing Subway.

A hospital fire killed twenty-nine people nearby
Fire moves fast through a hospital built to hold the sick still. At Changfeng Hospital fire, sparks from renovation work caught flammable paint in the east wing on April 18, 2023, at 12:57 in the afternoon. The fire tore through the inpatient department before crews put it out just before six that evening. Twenty-nine people died. Twenty-six were patients. One was a nurse, one a nursing assistant, one a visiting family member. Thirty-nine more were hurt. It became the deadliest structure fire in Beijing in twenty years. A building meant to move the sick toward recovery became, for one afternoon, the thing that killed them.
Long before hospitals and subways, this ground already moved people for the state.

A gate from Jin Zhongdu lay buried under Fengtai
Under later Fengtai, diggers found a gate from Zhongdu, the capital the Jin dynasty built when it moved its court to this ground in 1153. Beside it lay a stone road laid down centuries later, in the Qing dynasty. One was built to guard who passed through the capital. The other carried imperial traffic across it. Both stayed buried until archaeologists found them, layered under a district that had already been rebuilt many times over.
An imperial gate and an imperial road turned up stacked in the same ground, centuries apart.

A village's name splintered into numbered city blocks
A village called Shiliuzhuang once stood close to where you are standing, 115 feet away. It did not survive as a village. Its name splintered into a set of numbered blocks: Shiliuyuan North First, Shiliuyuan North Second, Shiliuyuan South First, Shiliuyuan South Second. The old name lives on only as a syllable folded into each new address. Every version of this ground has been reorganized to move more people through it. Villagers moved through. Subway riders moved through. Names moved through administrative maps.
Ten platforms and seven tracks keep running under a stretch of Fengtai that has been regrouped, renamed, and rebuilt around the same job of moving people through.
