The short answer

Elk Ridge Drive, in Elk Ridge, Utah, is the site of a garage explosion on September 22, 2023, that killed a 19-year-old who had been working on a compressed natural gas tank. The blast scattered debris across neighbouring yards. The lot itself was platted as Lot 3 of Dryland Plat A only in January 2021, with a house completed there by 2025.

September 2023

A compressed gas tank killed a teenager in his garage

A 19-year-old was killed in a garage explosion on September 22, 2023, on the 200-300 block of Elk Ridge Drive. He had been working on a compressed natural gas tank when it blew apart.

The blast scattered debris across neighboring yards. Homes on both sides of the block took the impact. Investigators believed the tank ruptured while he worked on it inside the garage.

There is little else written down about this stretch of Elk Ridge Drive. The lot you're standing near was raw land two decades ago. Utah County records show it was carved out of a larger holding by Lee and Haskell Properties LLC. It was platted as Lot 3 of Dryland Plat A in January 2021. Kyle S. Haskell and Kristen Haskell took title the following month. A house was built on it by 2025. For most of its recorded history, this ground was simply dry farmland waiting for a subdivision map.

He died in his own garage, working on a tank that was never supposed to explode.
1882 and after

Payson built in brick while this corner stayed empty

Two miles northwest, Payson kept its history in brick while this block was still open land. The Payson Presbyterian Church went up on Main Street in 1882. A cluster of named houses came from the same era. They include the John Dixon House, the Samuel Douglass House, and the Christopher F. Dixon Jr. House. They still stand near it. None of that reaches this corner of Elk Ridge. Here, the record starts with a plat map in 2021 and ends, so far, with the night a tank exploded in somebody's garage.

1971

Elk Ridge began as paperwork, not a settlement

Elk Ridge itself is barely older than the subdivision it sits inside. The town was incorporated in 1971. This was a paperwork event more than a settlement. It did not grow up slowly around a church or a store. It was drawn on a map and given a name. Dryland Plat A was drawn the same way, fifty years later. The city and the lot share that. Both exist because somebody filed for them. Nobody built a life there first.

1914 to now

A hospital rose nearby while this acre stayed farmland

A hospital rose in the valley decades before this street had a name. Mountain View Hospital opened in Payson in 1914. It was built to treat a growing farming county. It has stood for over a century. It sits three miles southwest of this block. Nothing ties it to Elk Ridge Drive itself. The valley was building places to save lives. This particular acre stayed dry farmland.

1882 and standing

Named houses stood in Payson before this lot was platted

Two and a half miles northwest, Payson kept building while this ground waited. The John Dixon House has stood since the 19th century. Several named homes from that era still stand on Payson's streets. They carry names, dates, and deeds going back generations. This block carries none of that. It has a plat filed in 2021. A house was finished in 2025. One September night put it in the news for the only time.

The house on the lot stands rebuilt and ordinary, and the street runs on past it.
